Our next stretch goal, a digital adventure module co-designed with Jerry Holkins, hits close to home for me. Not only because I’ve been a fan of Penny Arcade and Jerry Holkins’ writing since I was in high school, but also because I know that Jerry has a personal investment in Critical Core.
Jerry “Tycho Brahe” Holkins is more than just one of the creators of Penny Arcade, one of the world’s most successful online comics, he is also a trendsetter and influencer within the world of role-playing games. Penny Arcade, through the comic and the incredibly popular PAX conventions, has encouraged an open and accepting environment for geeks and gamers, and has worked to drive a message of support and acceptance for neurodiverse people in the gaming world.
Jerry has a special and unique perspective on this endeavor because he has been deeply involved with friends and family members who face many of the social skills challenges that we address in Game to Grow groups. Jerry has been vocal about the challenges that his son has faced and the importance of understanding neurodiversity. Playing RPGs with his children, Jerry has developed a sense for just how different a game is when playing with kids and with neurodiverse players. Several years ago, Jerry, Adam Davis, and I met to talk about a module that would help kids build social skills. Due to the success of this project, we’re finally ready to make that a reality and get it into the hands of all of our Kickstarter backers.
Jerry has some amazing story ideas that he has already used with his own family to put into this adventure module, so let’s push this Kickstarter up and past the 150k goal!
